How much will shipping cost when it's charged (in a separate transaction, in addition to the tier cost) AFTER the campaign ends?

It’s super hard to answer this question for everyone, ordering every combination of books, living everywhere … which is why I can only accurately charge for shipping at the end of the campaign, AFTER I know how much you’ve ordered and where you live.

I can, however, give you some approximations! Please understand that they’re ONLY approximations, though, so please consider checking shipping rates for your specific situation ahead of time if you’re worried about being surprised.

As of right now, domestic US shipping is around $5 for one hardback, Canada is about $17, and everywhere else is around $21, but that could change. Paperbacks may cost slightly less to ship, though not necessarily. Please also keep in mind that if you order additional books (as Add-Ons, maybe), your package will cost more to ship than it would otherwise.

How much does shipping cost?

I can, however, give you some approximations! Please understand that they’re ONLY approximations, though, so please consider checking shipping rates for your specific situation ahead of time if you’re worried about being surprised.

As of right now, domestic US shipping is around $6 for one hardback, Canada is about $18, and everywhere else is around $22, but that could change. Paperbacks may cost slightly less to ship, though not necessarily. Please also keep in mind that if you order additional books as Add-Ons, your package will cost more to ship than it would otherwise.

Can I get extra books in addition to what I receive as part of my main backer rewards, including copies of the first book in the series (Gore Point) if I missed that campaign?

Yes! You can order them as “Add-Ons” to your campaign pledge. Here’s how that works:

After you choose your pledge level, Kickstarter will ask you if you’d like to add any “Add-On items” to your order. This is where you can select all sorts of stuff: paperbacks, ebooks, and hardbacks of Gore Point (book 1) in case you missed that one, or additional hardbacks and/or paperbacks of City of Fire (book 2 – the main book for this campaign.)

You will also be able to add other add-ons in addition to just the books, so be sure to check them out!

Can I add extra books, beyond what's in my backer level?

Yes! You can order them as “Add-Ons” to your campaign pledge. You will also be able to add them AFTER the campaign, when I send post-campaign surveys through a service called BackerKit.

TO ADD BOOKS TO YOUR PLEDGE HERE IN KICKSTARTER: After you choose your pledge level, Kickstarter will ask you if you’d like to add any “Add-On items” to your order. This is where you can add additional paperbacks, ebooks, and hardbacks of books in this series.

TO ADD BOOKS AFTER THE CAMPAIGN, IN BACKERKIT: A week or two after the campaign ends, I’ll send out a survey to get some information I need to deliver your items, and to ship any physical books you may have ordered. As you go through that survey, there will be opportunities to add Gore Point world books … but ALSO to add just about ANY paperback in my entire catalog!

Are you offering signed paperbacks?

No. Only hardbacks are signed. I’m sorry about that, but signed paperbacks weren’t very popular in my last campaign, so this is one way I’ve chosen to streamline things so that I deliver the best overall campaign experience for you.

Last updated: June 27, 2024 17:11

Are the paperbacks signed?

No, only the hardbacks are signed.

Last updated: January 30, 2025 14:08

If I order more books as "Add-Ons," will they be signed?

That depends if they’re hardbacks or paperbacks.

All hardbacks of City of Fire (book 2) and Gore Point (book 1) are signed, but please note that the paperbacks are not. This is true of Add-Ons, too – so yes … Add-On hardbacks of both books will all be signed!

What does it mean for a hardback to be "numbered and personalized"?

“Personalized” means I’ll sign it TO you rather than just signing it. (EX: “To Bob,” and then my signature.)

“Numbered” means that I’ve hand-numbered them starting from 1 and going until the last number in the run. Only first-run books are numbered. The ONLY way to get numbered copies is to be part of this Kickstarter. They’ll never be offered for these editions again.

Hand-numbered books are the bomb! They’re a collector-culture way of showing that your book was part of a limited printing, because later-run books are almost never hand-numbered by the author. If I number your hardback, that makes it a true collector’s edition!

The lower a book’s number is, the “better” that specific book is considered to be. A #1 limited edition book is considered the best and most valuable of any limited run.

If I get a numbered book, can I request a certain number?

Nope. It’s a logistical nightmare to manage requests for specific numbers.

Numbering works like this: 1. Backers at the $500 tier will get the lowest numbers. Order at this level is determined by when backing occurs, with the earliest backers getting the lowest numbers. 2. Backers at the $250 level will get the next lowest numbers, also with earlier backers getting the lowest numbers. 3. Backers at the $125 level will get the next lowest numbers. Numbers are randomly assigned amongst all other backers at the same level. 4. Backers at the $75 level will get the next lowest numbers, also randomly assigned amongst other backers at the same level.

How do you decide who gets which numbered books? Is there a way to upgrade to a lower-numbered book?

Last time, I offered a way to upgrade your book number, but it was a logistical nightmare. This time, I’m doing things this way:

  • The $5000, $2000, and $250-level tiers will receive the lowest-number (i.e., most valuable) books. ($5000 backers will receive lower numbered books than $2000 backers, and $2000 backers will receive lower numbered books than $250 backers.)
  • If more than one person backs at those three tiers mentioned above, the lower number will go to whoever backed the campaign first.
  • For all other backers receiving numbered books (as part of their tier reward or as Add-Ons), the book numbers will be randomly assigned.

Can I get numbered editions of Gore Point or City of Fire?

No, sorry. Numbered books are only available during a first run, so numbered editions of Gore Point and City of Fire were only available during those original campaigns.

Can I request a certain book number?

Nope. It’s a nightmare to manage stuff like that. See the other FAQ about numbered books.

Can my "signed and personalized" book be personalized to someone other than myself?

Yep! After the campaign ends, I’ll send out a survey to collect the information I need to deliver your rewards. In that survey, I’ll also ask who you’d like your book signed to, and you can choose whichever name (yours or someone else’s) you’d like.

Last updated: January 30, 2025 14:22

If I order a copy of the Gore Point (book 1) hardback as an Add-On item, can I get it numbered?

No, sorry. Numbered books are only available during a first run, not later runs. The folks who backed the original Gore Point Kickstarter campaign have the only numbered copies that will ever exist.

But that’s good for you if you get a numbered copy of City of Fire, right? You’ll know that your numbered copy is super-exclusive, and there will never be any more!

Can I have different rewards sent to different email addresses (for digital rewards) or different physical addresses?

No. All digital rewards must be sent to a single email address and all physical rewards must be sent to a single physical address.

Last updated: January 30, 2025 14:22

What does it mean when you say that a book is "personalized"?

At the $100 tier and higher, all reward books are signed, numbered, and personalized hardbacks. The “personalized” is a straightforward “To” attribution, handwritten above the signature on the same page as the book’s handwritten number.

It’ll be like this: “To [YOUR FIRST NAME].” And then my signature.

Last updated: June 27, 2024 17:11

Can I have my book personalized to someone other than myself?

Yep! After the campaign ends, I’ll send out a survey to collect the information I need to deliver (and possibly ship) your stuff, like your address and whatnot. In that survey, I’ll ask who you’d like your book signed to, so choose whichever name you want.

Last updated: June 27, 2024 17:11

Can I give a book (or anything reward) as a gift?

That’s up to you, really. All packages must ship to ONE address, so I can’t separate-out your order and ship it to two different places. If you’d like the whole of your order shipped to someone else, just enter their address instead of yours when you complete the survey I’ll send when the campaign is over.

For digital goods, the same thing applies: All digital goods are delivered to the same email address, but you can enter someone else’s email address instead of your own if you’d like.

What about taxes (like state tax or VAT) or customs fees?

I live in Texas, so if you also live in Texas, I have to charge you state sales tax. That, like shipping, will be charged in a separate transaction a few weeks after the campaign ends.

Beyond that, though, it’s kind of a black hole. As with shipping, a lot of “tax stuff” is unpredictable and impossible to estimate for every backer in every situation, so any taxes will be charged after the campaign in that separate transaction I keep mentioning.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
